Driving the Route

The Red Rock Scenic Route is a 7.5-mile portion of State Route 179 beginning 3 miles north of its access from Interstate 17 exit 298. It provides the scenery and recreation of Red Rock Country and national forest land, the amenities of the Village of Oak Creek, and is the primary gateway to the Sedona area.

How to get to the road:

From Flagstaff head south on State Route 89A till you reach Sedona then head south from Sedona on State Route 179, the scenic road.

From Phoenix

Take I-17 north for 100 miles to exit 298 (speed limit 65-75 miles per hour). Junction with State Route 179 and continue north for 3.5 miles; Red Rock Scenic Route begins shortly after you exit, at Milepost 302.5, on your way to the Village of Oak Creek and Sedona.

From Las Vegas

Start south on I-515 for approximately 14 miles. Continue south on US 93 for 83 miles. When you approach the city of Kingman, Arizona, enter I-40 and head east for 146 miles. When you approach the vicinity of Flagstaff, Arizona, take exit 195 toward 89-A. Merge onto I-17 via the exit on the LEFT toward Sedona/Phoenix and take it South for 40 miles to Exit 298. After you exit, turn North on State Route 179; the Red Rock Scenic Route begins shortly thereafter, at MP 302.5.

A more scenic alternative is to remain on I-17 for only four miles and take Exit 337 onto route 89A South towards Sedona. Stay on 89A for 25 miles through glorious Oak Creek Canyon. Visit Uptown Sedona and then turn left onto SR 179 heading South toward the Village of Oak Creek. The Red Rock Scenic Route will start at MP 310 and continue on through the Village, and end at MP 302.5 on your way to I-17.
