Hawaiian Tri Tip Steak with Sweet Onions
Makes 4 to 6 servings

Marinate time: 30 to 45 min.
Cooking time: 10 to 15 min.

Ingredients:

  • Hawaiian Pepper Rub:
    • 1/2 - Tablespoon sea salt
    • 1 - Tablespoon cracked black peppercorns
    • 1 - Tablespoon garlic, minced
    • 1 - Tablespoon ginger, grated
    • 1 - Tablespoon soy sauce
    • white pepper
    • 1 - Tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2-1/2 - pounds tri tip steaks
  • Sweet Onions:
    • 1 - medium Maui or Sweet onion
    • 1 - medium tomato
    • 3/4 - cup teriyaki sauce
    • white pepper
    • pepper flakes

Directions

  1. In a small mixing bowl, you need to add the sea salt, peppercorns, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, white pepper, and brown sugar. 
  2. Rub onto steaks. 
  3. Place in a zip lockable plastic bag, add marinate meat for 30 to 45 minutes.

Preheat grill to medium high heat.

  1. In a large skillet, add the Maui or sweet onion, tomato, teriyaki sauce, white pepper and pepper flakes. 
  2. Pan fry for 5 minutes or until done.
  3. Place steaks on grill and turn every 4 minutes. 
  4. Total cooking time is 10 to 15 minutes, depending on thickness of steaks. 
  5. Garnish with Sweet Onions.

Do-Ahead Tip Make these packets up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate. Pop them on the grill when you are ready to eat.
