Mom's Beaten Biscuits

Baking Time: 20 min.
Ingredients:
- 2 - cups all-purpose flour
- 1 - teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 - teaspoon salt
- 1/4 - teaspoon baking powder
- 1/8 - teaspoon cream of tartar
- 1/4 - cup lard (or shortening)
- 3/4 to 1 - cup ice water
- Butter
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400° F.
- In a mixing bowl, you want to combine flour,
sugar, salt, baking powder, and cream of tartar.
- Cut in lard (or shortening) until mixture is
like coarse crumbs.
- Hollow out center and add 3/4-cup ice
water. Mix well.
- (Add additional ice water to make a stiff
dough)
- Put dough on a lightly floured surface.
- Beat vigorously with a wooden mallet for 15
minutes. Turn, folding dough constantly.
- Roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
- Cut biscuits out with a floured 2-inch biscuit
cutter.
- Place on ungreased baking sheet. Prick
tops with a fork.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until light brown.
Serve warm with butter.
