Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat egg yolks with a 1/2-cup sugar until mixture is a yellow colored.  
  2. Add lemon juice and hot water.  Put all into the top part of a double boiler.  
  3. Set over simmering hot water and stir until thick.  Cool.
  4. In a mixing bowl, beat egg whites.  
  5. Add salt and remaining sugar (adding a little at a time) until mixture is thick and stiff.
  6. In the cool egg yolk mixture, fold in egg white mixture and fill pie shell.
  7. Bake 15 - 20 minutes or until light brown.
