Amish Half-Moon Pies

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com These are the guaranteed drip-less “preaching pies” that entice Amish children during long Sunday services.

Ingredients

  • Plain Pastry
  • 2 - cups dried sour apples
  • 2 - cups cold water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 - cups sugar
  • 1 - orange, juice and grated rind
  • 1 - Tablespoon cinnamon

Directions

Preheat oven to 450° F.

  1. Roll out pastry (use recipe for Plain Pastry) and cut in 8-inch circles.
In a medium saucepan, add dried apples with water and salt.
  2. Cook until they are soft and pulpy, add sugar, orange juice and rind, and cinnamon.
  3. Simmer until you cook the water away.
Place generous portions of the mixture on half the pastry rounds, fold over the pastry, pinch the edges tightly together, and bake for 10 minutes.
  4. Reduce heat to 350° and bake about 40 minutes longer until nicely browned.
