Fay's White Bread
Makes
2 loaves
Prep Time: 20 min
Rising Time: 2 hrs + 2 hrs
Baking Time: 30 min
Ingredients:
- 1 package dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 cups warm water
- 2-1/2 Tablespoons melted shortening
- 6 or 7 cups flour
Directions:
- Dissolve yeast in 1/2-cup warm water.
- In a large bowl, combine sugar, salt, 2-cups water, and
shortening.
- Add yeast mixture.
- Gradually add flour to form a soft dough.
- Turn onto a floured surface and knead until smooth.
- Place in greased bowl. Cover and let rise about 2 hours.
- Punch down.
- Divided into 2 portions and form into loaves.
- Place in greased bread pans and prick tops with fork.
- Let rise until higher than pans (about 2 hours).
Preheat oven to 375° F.
- Bake for 25 - 30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes.
- Butter tops of loaves. Place pans on side until loosened.
- Remove bread and cool completely.
