Moravian Sugar Buns

This is traditional Moravian love feast.

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comIngredients

  • 1 - cup hot mashed potatoes
  • 1 - cup sugar
  • 1 - cup melted butter
  • 1 - teaspoon salt
  • 2 - packages active dry yeast
  • 1 - cup lukewarm potato water
  • 5 - cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 - eggs, beaten
  • Topping
    • 1/4 - cup melted butter
    • 1/2 - cup brown sugar
    • 1/4 - teaspoon cinnamon

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 F.

  1. In a small cup, dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. 
  2. In a mixing bowl, add the mashed potatoes, sugar, butter, salt, and a cup of flour. Stir in the yeast mixture. 
  3. Add in the remaining flour and eggs. 
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise until double in size.
  5. Remove dough from mixing bowl and put on floured board. 
  6. Lightly knead and roll into 2-inch balls and flatten. 
  7. Grease 2 8-inch cake pans and place rolled dough. 
  8. Cover and let rise 2 hours. 
  9. Press holes in dough about 2-inches apart. 
  10. Fill holes with melted butter, sprinkle dough with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  11. Bake in oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
