Ingredients

1 - package active dry yeast
1/4 - cup warm water
2 - Tablespoons sugar
1 - cup milk, scalded (cooled to lukewarm)
1/2 - cup shortening
3-/2 - cups all-purpose flour, sifted
3/4 - teaspoon salt
2 - Tablespoons sugar
1 - egg

Directions

Preheat oven to 400� F. and grease baking sheet.

  • In a small bowl, combine the yeast, water and 1 tablespoon sugar. 
  • Allow to foam. 
  • In a mixing bowl, pour in the milk and add the yeast mixture. 
  • Sift together the flour, salt, and remaining sugar and add half the flour mixture to the milk. 
  • Stir in the egg. 
  • Now, add the remaining flour mixture. 
  • Mix all ingredients.
  • On a floured board, turn out the dough and lightly knead. 
  • Set in warm place until double in size about 1 hour. 
  • Roll out dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut out with floured biscuit cutter or drinking glass. 
  • Place cutout dough on baking sheet and let rise 30 minutes. 
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
