Deutsch Cake

The Pennsylvania German's served this on New Year's Eve, at intermission in Watch Night Services, and at "Putzings."

Makes 2 (8-inch) cakes.

Ingredients:Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com

  • 1 - cup sugar
  • 2 - teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 - cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1/2 - cup butter
  • 1/2 - cup shortening
  • 1 - cup milk
  • 1 - egg, beaten

Topping

  • 1/4 - cup brown sugar
  • 1 - Tablespoon cinnamon
  • 2 - Tablespoons butter, melted

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Flour and grease two 8-inch cake pans.

  1. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the sugar, baking powder, and flour.  Mix in the shortening, milk, and egg. 

  2. Mix the brown sugar and cinnamon together.  Punch holes in the batter, pour in the butter, and sprinkle the brown sugar-cinnamon mixture. 

  3. Bake in oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
