Mrs. Leibensperger's Devil's Food Cake

Makes 1 cake.Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com

Ingredients

Part 1

  • 1 - cup brown sugar, tightly packed
  • 1 - cup cocoa
  • 1/2 - cup sweet milk
  • Vanilla

Part 2

  • 1 - cup brown sugar, tightly packed
  • 1/2 - cup butter
  • 3 - egg yolks
  • 1/2 - cup sour milk
  • 1 - teaspoon soda
  • 2 - cups flour, sifted
  • 1 - egg white, stiffly beaten

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease & flour loaf cake pan.

  1. In a saucepan, add brown sugar, cocoa, sweet milk and vanilla.  Slowly bring to a boil.  Cool.

  2. In a mixing bowl, cream sugar and butter.  Adding unbeaten egg yolks, baking soda, dissolved in sour milk, flour, and egg white.  Mix well and stir in Part 1. 

  3. Pour batter into loaf cake pan.  Bake for 35 to 40 minutes.
