Walnut Cake

Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.comIngredients:

  • 1/2 - cup butter
  • 1-1/2 - cups granulated sugar
  • 4 - eggs
  • 1/2 - cup milk
  • 1 - teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-3/4 - cups flour, sifted
  • 1 - heaping teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 - teaspoon salt
  • Frosting
    • 2 - cups brown sugar
    • 2/3 - cup milk
    • 1/4 - cup butter, size of walnut
    • 1/2 - cup walnuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 350� F. Grease & flour 2 8-inch cake pans.

  1. Cream butter and sugar, add well-beaten eggs. Mix. 
  2. Add milk and vanilla and beat well. 
  3. Sift in flour, baking powder, and salt. 
  4. When well blended add stiffly beaten egg whites. 
  5. Pour into cake pans.
  6. Bake for 30 minutes. Cool.
  7. Cook sugar, milk, and butter together over low heat until creamy. 
  8. Remove from stove and beat until cool and thick. 
  9. Add nuts. 
  10. Spread on cake. 
  11. If you prefer, substitute pecans for walnuts.
