Black Walnut Squares

Makes 50 squares

Ingredients:Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com

  • Cake Ingredients:

    • 2 - eggs

    • 1 - cup sugar

    • 1/2 - cup butter

    • 2 - squares unsweetened chocolate

    • 3/4 - cup sifted flour

    • 3/4 - teaspoon baking powder

    • 1 - teaspoon vanilla

    • 1 - cup chopped, black walnuts

  • Frosting Ingredients:

    • 1 - egg white, unbeaten

    • 3/4 - cup confectioners' sugar

    • 3 - Tablespoons melted chocolate

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease shallow pans.

  1. Break eggs into bowl.  Beat and add sugar gradually. 

  2. Melt chocolate with butter add and stir together.  Sift flour and baking powder into bowl. 

  3. Dredge walnuts with a little flour and add with vanilla.  Bake in thin sheets for 15 minutes. Spread with frosting:

Frosting

  1. Stir together until soft and creamy. 

  2. As soon as baked sheets come out of the oven, spread with frosting. 

  3. Cool, cut in squares with sharp knife.
