IngredientsPennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com

  • 3 - eggs
  • 3 - cups flour
  • 2 - cups milk, scalded and cooled
  • 1 - yeast cake, dissolved in 1/2 cup
  • lukewarm water
  • 3/4 - cup butter
  • 1/2 - cup sugar

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 F.

  1. Beat the eggs lightly, form into paste with flour, milk, yeast-and-water, butter, and sugar.  Let rise, covered, in a greased bowl.

  2. Knead, let rise again.  Place on floured board, shape into long, narrow loaves.

  3. Let rise in pans until doubled in size. Bake for about 45 minutes.

  4. When loaves are cooled, cut in diagonal slices about 1/2-inch thick with sharp knife.  Brown slices carefully in oven.
