Tzvivvelle (Onion Soup) Supp

Makes 6 servings Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking from AlansKitchen.com

Ingredients

  • 3 - cups water
  • 2 - cups yellow onions, chopped
  • 3 - cups milk
  • 2 - Tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 - teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 - teaspoon pepper
  • 6 - slices toast
  • 1/2 - cup cheddar cheese, grated

Directions

  1. In a stockpot, bring water to a boil at moderate heat and add in the onions. 

  2. Cook until tender or about 30 minutes. 

  3. Add in the milk and reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. 

  4. Next, add the butter, salt and pepper. 

  5. Simmer for another 2 minutes.

  6. In the soup bowls, place the toast and place a serving of cheese on the toast. 

  7. Then ladle the soup over the cheese and toast. 

  8. Serve right away.
