At this historic site, a ragtag group of
Confederate old men and young boys beat the odds and held off an
assault by 5,000 Union cavalry soldiers on a bridge of strategic
importance to General Lee’s army, then under siege in
Petersburg.
Eighteen miles east of South Boston. Take
Route 92 to Clover. Go approximately five miles to Route 600 and
turn left. Go about another three miles and turn right on Route
855.
Places to Picnic
One picnic shelter can be rented from 9 a.m. to
dusk (all day). It is a large shelter and is available weekends
only from April 1 to June 15 and Sept. 15 to Nov. 15. The shelter
is available seven days a week during the rest of the year.
TRAILS:
Hiking, bicycle trails and self-guided historical and nature
trails available.
VISITOR CENTER, GIFT SHOP:
A new 3,800-square-foot visitor center was opened in 1995 as a
result of a unique partnership between Virginia State Parks,
Virginia Power, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and the Historic
Staunton River Foundation. Displays on the history of the area and
exhibits on electric energy cover about half the center's floor
space.
