BEST Places to PicnicThe Marion County Parks And Recreation Commission (MCPARC), supported by The Marion County Commission, Board of Education, and the City of Fairmont, was formed in 1977. It is the home of West Virginia's first Wave Pool and within its 8 parks are a multitude of facilities covering over 3000 acres. MCPARC also maintains 20 miles of rail trails in the county.

MCPARC is committed to the purpose of providing you with quality park and recreation areas for all your leisure activities. MCPARC offers year-round programming for all ages: softball/basketball leagues, community-ed classes, 10K runs, youth sports, occupational therapy, dance lessons, monthly bus trips and much more. MCPARC is also active in many areas of the community and helps many organizations with special events and projects.

MCPARC has over a dozen outdoor pavilions that can be reserved for seasonal use. MCPARC also offers an indoor facility at East Marion Park with restrooms and kitchen that is available year round and ideal for birthday parties, family reunions and meetings.

Curtisville Lake

Curtisville Lake offers 695 acres of lush scenery. Around the 30-acre lake, there are hiking trails and picnicking. The lake is periodically stocked by the Department of Natural Resources and the fishing is good and is home of the MCPARC Annual Family Fishing Day.

Directions to Curtisville Lake:

  • From Fairmont: Take Route 250 North out of Fairmont towards Mannington.
  • When you reach the Town of Mannington, take a left on Main Street,
    (there are brown signs for Curtisville Lake).
  • Main St. turns into Rt. 1 and passes the Mannington Fair grounds.
  • Stay on Rt. 1 for about 5 miles just past Logansport.
  • Take a left on Curtisville Pike (Rt.7).
  • Go about a mile and the lake is on the left.

East Marion Recreation Complex

East Marion Recreation Complex, otherwise known as "East Marion Park", located on State Street Extension, Fairmont, WV, is a beautiful, complete family park with a variety of recreation opportunities. This 32-acre park offers tennis, horseshoes, a basketball court, a softball field, hiking and jogging trails, pavilions, a playground, picnicking, mini golf, and the famous "Wave Pool" and waterslide.

If fun, affordable, leisure activities are what you are looking for to accommodate your party, reunion, or company picnic, this is the facility for you to consider. We have just completed paving our roads and parking lot making it even more enjoyable!

Each pavilion at East Marion Park has picnic tables, electric, water, and grills.

Directions From Downtown Fairmont:
Take either the Third Street Bridge from Fairmont Avenue or the Jefferson Street High Level Bridge to the first stop light on Merchant Street. Turn onto Newton Street going up the hill towards Mazza's Home Plate. Take a right at the first optional stop sign and the next left onto State Street. Continue on State Street past the Dairy Mart and then the road curves to the right. Take a left up the State Street Extension hill. There are signs at the bottom of the hill where you turn left that read East Marion Recreational Complex.

When you reach the top of the hill and pass pavilion one, turn left onto the main park road. Take an immediate left towards the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to go up the hill to the police reserve building.

Directions From I-79:
Take exit 135 off I-79. If coming from the south, take a right towards Pleasant Valley; if coming from the north, take a left towards Pleasant Valley. There are direction signs for both the Wave Pool and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. When you reach the first stop sign at the Pleasant Valley Road intersection, take a left. Follow this road approximately 1.5 miles until the East Marion Recreational Complex sign is on the right. Take that right up State Street Extension hill.

When you reach the top of the hill and pass pavilion one, turn left onto the main park road. Take an immediate left towards the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to go up the hill to the police reserve building.

GUYSES RUN FISHING PARK

MCPARC has recently acquired the Guyses Run Fishing Park near Colfax. The old Eastern , Peabody Coal property has excellent fishing opportunities and unlimited recreational potential. MCPARC along with WVU and the County Commission is planning major infrastructure improvements to turn this naturally beautiful park into a top of the line community fishing park.

Guyses Run will be open on Wednesday evenings from 4:00pm � 8:00pm (free for school-aged children � $2.00 per adult) . Saturdays from 9:00am � 3:00pm ($3.00 per adult and $2.00 per child). Sundays 1:00pm � 4:00pm ( $2.00 per person). All fishing is catch and release except for the trout which can be taken at $3.00 per trout.

Hutchinson Park

Hutchinson Park is located along the West Fork River Trail. This 3.5 acre park can be accessed from Rt.19 about 1 mile south of Worthington. MCPARC recently purchased the land and started several projects. A fence was added to the third base line and benches were set next to the entry sign. MCPARC is awaiting a trail grant that will go towards improving drainage and the construction of a trailhead parking area. Spring plans include the addition of playground equipment and improvements to the existing field.

Mary Lou Retton Park

The Mary Lou Retton Youth Park, located in Fairmont, WV off of Mary Lou Retton Drive and Old Monongah Road, is named after the 1984 Olympic Gold Medallist from Marion County. Included in its rolling 25-acre area are a wealth of facilities, such as four baseball fields, one football field, tennis courts with practice wall, picnicking, playgrounds, pavilion, and the West Virginia Miner's Memorial.

The pavilion is available for $35.00, has picnic tables, electricity, water, and grills, and has seating for 50 people with restrooms nearby.

Pump Station Park - "Head Of The Mon

Pump Station Park is located on the eastern shore of the Monongahela River just below Millersville. Accessible by boat it has a small pavilion providing a picnic and fishing location.

Worthington Park

Worthington Park, located in Worthington, WV, is a beautiful 10-acre waterfront park offering softball, pavilion, picnicking, playground, fishing, and horseshoe courts. This park is located right beside the West Fork River Rail Trail.

The pavilion is available for reservations at a cost of $30.00, seats approximately 75 people, and has picnic tables, electricity, water, grills, and restrooms.
