County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia taking
its name from the Native term, Kanawha: "place of white
stone". As of 2000, the population was 200,073. Its county seat
is Charleston. Kanawha County is the most populous county in the state
of West Virginia.
During 1974, Kanawha County became known for its
textbook controversy. Conservatives wanted to purge material they
considered unsuitable from school textbooks, leading to John D.
Maurice writing his Pulitzer Prize winning editorials.
Kanawha County is part of the Charleston, WV
metropolitan area, with a 2006 Census population estimate of 305,526
Find a Place to Picnic
The Park was created over 50 years ago by a dedicated group of
Kanawha County residents. It has grown into one of the most beautiful
parks in the region.
Located 10 minutes from downtown Charleston, WV,
the park includes over a thousand acres of woodland, hiking and biking
trails, a handicapped accessible 18 hole par three golf course, an
Olympic size pool, picnic shelters of all sizes, tennis courts, sand
volleyball courts, bike rentals, pedal boat rentals and a modern

Route 114 North (Greenbrier Street) 2.5 miles, turn left on Coonskin
Drive, Park entrance 1 mile.
Shawnee Park is located on Route 25. Take I-64 from Charleston, WV.
Exit at Dunbar and turn right. Then left onto Route 25.
Located on the Coal River in Tornado, WV. Take I-64 west from
Charleston, exit at Institute and turn west onto Route 25. Take Rt. 25
to light, turn left onto the St. Albans Bridge.
Continue straight after going over bridge and
turn right onto 6th Street. Follow 6th Street until you reach West
Main and turn right over bridge. Continue until the Fire Department
and turn left onto Coal River Road.
Go several miles, pass through Tornado and turn
left onto Smith Road, crossing over Coal River. The Park is on the
left after you cross the bridge.
Facilities include two soccer fields, shelters,
and play equipment. Restrooms available.
This Park is located off Route 61 adjacent to East Bank Middle
School in Kanawha County, WV
Picnic Shelter Area: 9:00 AM until dusk. There
is one shelter available to reserve.
