The
Dolly Sods Scenic Area was created in 1970 to
protect the unique scenic qualities of the area
north of Forest Road 19. Today approximately 2,000
acres along Forest Road 75 is managed by the US
Forest Service as a scenic area.
The Dolly Sods
Scenic Area is the most accessible and most visited
part of the Sods. Berry picking, hunting and
sightseeing are popular pastimes here. Forest Road
75 crosses the Scenic Area from south to north.
Towards
the south end of the Scenic Area, the landscape is
more forested with occasional openings or vistas.
The Overlook gives visitors sweeping views of the
North Fork Valley 3,000 fee below. The Northland
Loop Trail is a one half-mile trail that introduces
visitors to bogs, barrens and berries.
The
Dolly Sods Picnic Area: This
small picnic area is nestled among the trees near
the top of the Allegheny Plateau. It is located near
the Dolly Sods Scenic Area and the Dolly Sods
Wilderness.
Season: Open year
round.
Facilities: Each site
has a picnic table, grill and waste receptacle.
There are two non-accessible vault toilets in the
area.
Attractions: The Dolly
Sods Scenic Area offers a unique view of northern,

less than a mile from the picnic area.
Hiking: The Dolly
Sods Wilderness offers challenging hiking
experiences because the trail junctions are not
signed and there are no bridges over stream
crossing. Topo maps are recommended for wilderness
adventures.

Campground is located north of the picnic area. Red
Creek Campground offers 12 campsites that include
picnic tables, fire rings, tent pads, and lantern
holders.

fee for use of the picnic area.
