Kate Chopin was an American author of short stories and
novels, mostly of a Louisiana Creole background. The Awakening is
a short novel by Kate Chopin, first published in 1899. It is widely
considered to be a proto-feminist precursor to American modernism.
While
visiting the St. Louis World's Fair on August 20, 1904, she was felled
by a brain hemorrhage and died two days later, at the age of 54.
