"anti-hero" persona, which he developed at the height of the
Vietnam counterculture, made him one of the top box-office draws of the
1960s and 1970s.
He died on November 7, 1980 at the age of 50 in Ciudad Ju�rez, Chihuahua,
Mexico, from two heart attacks caused by blood clots following a
seven-hour operation to remove or reduce a metastatic tumor in his
stomach.
