Grilled Portabella Mushroom Burgers

Ingredients

  • 2 - Tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 - Tablespoon chopped fresh basil leaves*
  • 2 - teaspoons finely chopped fresh garlic
  • 2 - medium (about 4 inches in diameter) portabella mushrooms
  • 2 - onion slices
  • 2 - whole wheat hamburger buns, split
  • 2 - romaine lettuce leaves
  • 2 - slices tomato

Directions

Preheat gas grill to medium or charcoal grill until coals are ash white.

  1. In a small bowl, you want to combine butter, basil and garlic.
  2. Brush butter mixture over mushrooms, onion and cut-sides of buns.
  3. Place mushrooms and onions on grill.
  4. Grill, turning once and brushing with remaining butter mixture, for 6 to 8 minutes or until mushrooms are tender.
  5. Place buns on grill, cut-side down. Grill until toasted for 1 to 2 minutes.
  6. To serve, you want to place lettuce on grilled bun and add grilled mushroom, tomato and onion slice.

*Substitute 3/4 teaspoon dried basil leaves.

Broiling Directions:

  1. Heat broiler. Brush butter mixture over mushrooms, onion and cut-sides of buns.
  2. Place mushrooms and onions on broiler pan.
  3. Broil 6 to 8 inches from heat, turning once and brushing with remaining butter mixture, for 6 to 8 minutes or until mushrooms are tender.
  4. Place buns on broiler pan, cut-side up.
  5. Broil 6 to 8 inches from heat for 1 to 2 minutes or until toasted.
